About the SizeHex Online Ruler

The SizeHex Online Ruler is a free, browser-based digital measuring tool that lets you measure physical objects in centimeters (cm), millimeters (mm), and inches directly on your screen — with no app downloads, no sign-ups, and zero cost. Whether you're a designer checking element dimensions, a student needing a quick measurement, or a professional working from home without a physical ruler, SizeHex has you covered.

Our ruler uses your screen's actual pixel density (PPI — Pixels Per Inch) to render ruler markings at their true physical size. Because every screen is different, we provide a built-in Calibration Tool that lets you set the exact PPI for your monitor — ensuring 100% real-world measurement accuracy every time.

How to Use the Online Ruler — Step by Step

  1. Calibrate your screen (Recommended): Click the "Calibrate" button in the toolbar. Enter your screen's diagonal size in inches (e.g., 15.6" for a laptop, 27" for a desktop monitor). Alternatively, hold a standard credit card against the screen and use the slider to match the on-screen orange box to the card's exact size. Calibration is saved in your browser automatically.
  2. Select your measurement unit: Use the unit switcher in the toolbar to choose between cm (centimeters), in (inches), or px (pixels).
  3. Place the ruler on an edge: Click Left, Right, Top, or Bottom in the toolbar to position the ruler along any edge of your screen. You can also click the shortcut cards on the main screen.
  4. Measure your object: Hold your object flat against the chosen screen edge and read the measurement from the ruler markings.
  5. Drop guide lines: Click anywhere on the ruler canvas to place a permanent guide line. This is useful for marking two points and measuring the distance between them.

Pro Tips for Accurate Measurements

Common Use Cases for an Online Ruler

An on-screen ruler is surprisingly versatile. Here are some popular scenarios where people use the SizeHex Online Ruler every day:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Yes — after calibration it is 100% accurate. Because every monitor has a different number of pixels per inch (PPI), the ruler uses your calibrated PPI value to calculate real physical distances. Without calibration, it falls back to a common 96 PPI estimate, which may be slightly off for your specific screen.

Click the "Calibrate" button in the toolbar. You have two options: (1) Enter your screen's diagonal size in inches — common sizes are 13.3" (MacBook Air), 15.6" (most laptops), or 24"–27" (desktop monitors). Or (2) Hold a standard credit card (85.6mm × 53.98mm) against the screen and drag the slider until the orange box matches the card perfectly. Your calibration is saved in your browser automatically.

When your browser zoom is not at 100%, the browser scales all CSS pixels up or down relative to their physical size. This directly affects how large the ruler markings appear on screen. Always ensure your browser is at 100% zoom (Ctrl+0 / Cmd+0) for accurate measurements.

Yes! The SizeHex Online Ruler is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS phones and tablets. Since mobile screen PPI values vary widely across devices, we strongly recommend calibrating using the credit card method for the most accurate results on your specific phone.

The SizeHex Online Ruler supports three measurement units: Centimeters (cm), Inches (in), and Pixels (px). You can switch between units at any time using the unit selector in the toolbar — the ruler updates instantly.

PPI (Pixels Per Inch) is the density of pixels on your physical screen. A 1080p monitor at 24" has roughly 92 PPI, while a Retina MacBook has 220+ PPI. Since the ruler uses CSS pixels to draw its markings, knowing the exact PPI is essential to translate those pixel counts into real-world centimeters or inches accurately.

While the ruler is active, simply click anywhere on the ruler canvas to drop a permanent guide line at that position. You can place multiple guides. Hover over the ruler to see a live crosshair tooltip showing your exact position in the selected unit. Click the Clear Guides button (eraser icon) in the toolbar to remove all guides at once.

Yes, absolutely! The SizeHex Online Ruler is 100% free to use with no subscriptions, no account creation, and no feature limitations. There are no ads on the ruler canvas itself, and your calibration data is stored only locally in your browser — never on our servers.
